Background
In April 2018, WHO established the Gaza Trauma Working Group (TWG) with the objective of enhancing the trauma pathway through improved coordination, minimum standards of care, and enhance data management.
The escalation of conflict in October 2023 has created an enormous trauma burden while severely disrupting existing services. The death and displacement of health workers, along with disruption of communication, has severely constrained coordination, while also requiring surge support in the form of Emergency Medical Teams.
In response to the continued conflict, a modified TWG remains under the leadership of WHO with EMT coordination an integral component.
The main objective of the Trauma TWG is to improve the quality of comprehensive trauma care, including pre-hospital care, emergency stabilization, acuta damage-control surgery, intensive care management, critical patients transfer, reconstructive surgery, and physical rehabilitation.
Additional specific objectives:
- Enhance coordination and referral mechanisms among the EMTs and other actors involved in trauma activities
- Identify gaps and needs in trauma care and highlight priority areas for immediate actions and interventions.
The already established Rehabilitation Task Force will continue to operate as a subgroup of the TWG.
