Background
In view of the frequent and widespread occurrences of cholera outbreaks in Somalia different technical working groups and task forces have been created over the years. In September 2023 in a meeting between FMOH public health, WHO, UNICEF, Health cluster and WASH cluster it was decided to merge existing national technical working groups and task forces to prepare, prevent and respond to acute water diarrhea and cholera.
Objective
Implement the Somalia strategy for cholera prevention and control 2020-2024 taking into account:
- Ensuring early detection and response to contain outbreaks
- Adopting a multisectoral approach to prevent and control cholera in hotspots
- Establishing an effective coordination mechanism for technical support, resource mobilization and partnership at local and global levels
While working on the five pillars identified by the Global Task Force on Cholera Control (GTFCC)
- Surveillance and reporting
- Health care system strengthening
- Use of oral cholera vaccine (OCV)
- Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH)
- Community engagement
